Betsy DeVos takes up the gun debate

Ever since a mass murderer opened fire inside a high school in Florida, the entire country has been talking about ways to stop gun violence. While Democrats have been talking about gun control and Republicans have been talking about looking at mental health care, there haven’t been very many people in the middle. It’s more than a little surprising that one of the moderate voices in this regard appears to be President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education. Betsy DeVos has been a bit of a lightning rod for controversy. It appears at least for now, she’s starting to feel her roots and has instead become someone that has something to offer the discussion.

On a recent appearance on the Hugh Hewitt radio show, DeVos talked about the need for a real discussion about what is driving these mass shootings. That means that the cabinet member wants Congress to start holding hearings about the shootings. Those hearings are something that members of Congress, including Washington Senator Patty Murray, are in full support of having. The problem so far has been that Republicans have to be brought on board. For now, at least, there isn’t a Republican who has stepped up and agreed that there is a need for hearings.

Now the Democrats and apparently Betsy DeVos are going to have to team up in order to figure out how the hearings could eventually take place. While the Secretary believes the thing that needs to be looked at is mental health, the Democrats believe that the focus needs to be on how they can control the flow of guns into the hands of people who are willing to commit mass murder.

The partnership is one that has set the government on its ear when you consider that Murray and other Democrats were waging all-out war on DeVos and her appointment. When President Trump initially put her up in the cabinet, it was considered a rather big insult to the department of education. There was quite a bit of worry that DeVos, who had been an outspoken advocate of private schools, was now going to be able to have the government favor private schools. Democrats were worried that she was going to be dismantling the public education system. While she has done some things that Democrats have not been remote fans of, it doesn’t appear as though she as dangerous as some thought.

At the same time, DeVos is clearly still one of the flag bearers of the new conservative movement. That’s one of the reasons there has been so much surprise that she has been willing to talk about having congress hold hearings into gun violence. So far, the rest of the Trump administration has yet to echo her calls for more investigations into what causes the kind of violence that we saw in Parkland, Florida. Now the country will have to sit back and wait to see what action, if any the federal government ends up taking in response to the tragedy.
