Dick and Betsy DeVos’ Philanthropy

Dick and Betsy DeVos attract much criticism as well as admiration for their political philanthropy. Despite that, the couple gives more in charity related activities than in politics. The total charitable contributions amount to $139 million, making their political contributions nothing but pocket change. More than that, the couple gave $11.6 million in charity in 2015 while for the last 5 years Betsy told the Federal Government that they had only given $6 million.

One notable factor is that the DeVos giving did not begin in their generation but in their respective previous generations. History records show that DeVos family has been active in Republican politics for many decades. Rich DeVos, Dick’s dad, was named in Forbes records in 2015 as one of the highest givers in America when he gave $104 million that year. The Forbes’ report further shows that in the entire DeVos family lifetime, they gave 5.2 billion dollars. At the same time, Betsy also came from a highly reputable family; Edgar, the dad, was a prominent industrialist in Holland, and he was highly philanthropic in political and charitable courses.

Dick and Betsy DeVos prioritize their giving to education related courses. Dick confessed to a news anchor that they noticed the loophole in the old system that made public schools not good enough. Consequently, the two decided to give to charter and vouchers schools that are mainly run by transformational people. When the couple gives to these schools, they expect to see changes that should soon be adopted in the public schools. Therefore, albeit Dick and Betsy DeVos do not give to public schools, they expect their giving to change the public schools eventually.
